| At Health Analytics Asia, we are passionate about data, facts, and champions who walk the talk against fake news. In a little over two months, we have had the opportunity to work with an amazing and ever-growing network of medical practitioners, public health experts, data scientists, authors, journalists, fact-checkers, and healthcare enthusiasts across Asia. To call it an enriching experience would be an understatement.
There’s so much to learn, so much to unlearn. Sometimes, the lessons take you by surprise. The other day, my six-year-old spotted a spelling error on the safety instructions manual in an aircraft. I was glad – as any mother would be, I suppose – but she was agitated. “We have to tell them that the spelling of ‘upwards’ is wrong,” she kept saying.
After a few minutes of animated discussions, when she saw that I wasn’t doing anything to remedy the situation, the girl decided to take matters in her own hands. “Excuse me,” she called out to the airhostess, from her aisle seat. “Can you please correct this spelling? It’s not ‘upawads’, but ‘upwards’,” she said, in all earnestness. The airhostess thanked the first grader, before assuring her that the matter would be brought to the notice of the concerned authorities. “Will it be changed by tomorrow?” asked the little one, before we disembarked.
The incident made me think about the approach that we, as adults, often take amidst the deluge of fake news. Are we too busy to call out unverified facts? Are we too smug in our knowledge to care about the ill-effects of misinformation and disinformation in world?
I hope you think differently. I hope you will join us in our battle against fake news in health. I hope you will enjoy reading our stimulating stories and engaging data visualisation section at http://www.ha-asia.com/.
